Artist's Comments

So, another old deviation I wanted to revisit, and that for various reasons. The first one being that I think the original was ugly. It was made for a contest when I just got out of an "artistic frustration" pass, and it was crappy. Period. The second reason is that the original artwork inspired :iconlz0291: to write a story based on it. The thing is, while the short story did honour a lot the drawing (and me as well), I feel like the drawing did not honour the very well-written and well-thought story. So I decided to do it all again from scratch.

So, to resume the idea I had back then, it was to take the concept of Mimics in the Final Fantasy series (monsters that look like treasure chests) and use it... for a materia. And see who would be the first stup... careless person who would fall into the trap. And guess who ?

Anyway, for a better background, I really invite you to read :iconlz0291:'s story : [link]

Now about mere technical stuff, I tried to do a tricky perspective, but failed. At least it doesn't seem TOO weird, I guess. Used Painter for lineart and colouring and Photoshop for adjustments. Her costume isn't 100% accurate, since some details of it were really pissing me off, so I preferred passing on them. I also decided to put her ribbon down to follow lz0291's story.

my..
I is impressed >3
i think the full size is.. too much, but seem pretty nice >3
:icondarkarcana:
Actually, I put full size because that dAmn deviantART didn't want to display a smaller preview when I uploaded it... I tried again just now, but it still doesn't want. I'll try again later.

I liked the first version: a little sketchy in some places and obivously just a headshot, but it's the details that sell it.

There are various reasons that pushed me to think the first version was really not good. As you pointed out, it was definitely sketchy ; I had to use a lot of the Eraser in Photoshop to fix most of the lines. The anatomy was good from the top of the head until the shoulders, but the arms were really wrong. It was also coloured using my now old cel-shading style, which made her look too shiny for stone (she looked more like... plastic, maybe). And the "special effects" I used back then were kinda dull, even though I was happy back then because it was something quite new for me.

But you're right, for the few things that were there, I put a maximum of details. I tried to keep a maximum of those details in this version, while giving a full view this time, because the framing was just... awful. Still, it kinda reminds me I will have someday to do head shots with my new style.

What do you think she's thinking right now?

Something like "Oh crap.", I guess.

excellent work! the wispy aftereffect of the petrification lingering in the air is pretty cool and so is the stony texture. the little evil grin from the mimic materia has come across as cute in it's malevolence. nice choice for the background too. is it a stock photo or is it somewhere in particular?

and of course, thanks for the prasing on my story. glad to see the inspiration i got from the original went full circle, especially when this was the end result :D
:icondarkarcana:
It is a stock photo, taken from CG Textures. Quite a good site for stock photos, actually.

And I'm glad you like it, since you participated in a way in the process of the picture (I re-read your story several times to leave me inspired).

I've been remiss in responding to this one... and without checking your gallery, I have to say that my memories of the original are a little vague, but I think I do remember my first instinct being "Nice, I only wish it was a 3/4-full body portrait!"

I like this one a lot, but it's probably my unfamiliarity with the story that keeps me from completely charting this as a top-ten, compared to some of your other really good statue pieces. (Oh, and durh, in case you haven't noticed, I really do like your statue pieces. :XD:) The perspective matches the background well, and drawing at a 'forced' perspective like that is no easy feat!

Something that strikes me as off here, though: the flickering magic surrounding her is a really good effect, but it looks a little jarring because it doesn't affect the surroundings at all (no reflective light in the grass, etc.) That's a really picky nit, though, and with magic, I know you have to keep open-minded... it could be like an astral power signature that is outwardly invisible, but you're just illustrating it for our benefit.

Overall, though, good stuff! Glad to see you redoing earlier pictures... an artist is always re-creating, as well as creating! And I hope to see more all-new ones, too!
